Cut across the bed rather than along it, silver travertine gives up its stripes and turns cloudy instead: charcoal, pewter and warm grey pooling into one another across the face. Tumbling then softens every edge and corner, so the pavers meet like old ones. It looks as though it has been down for decades on the day it is laid.
