The octagon and dot is the oldest trick in the tiled floor: stretch a white field, then pin it at every corner with a small dark square. Here the field is polished Carrara and the dots are a near-black stone, and the effect is instantly period, chemists and hotel lobbies and terrace hallways. It brings its own history; you supply the room.
